The HALO Trust

Sri Lanka's 20 year civil war ended with an estimated 1.6 million landmines scattered across its former battlefields; making it one of the most densely mined places on the planet. This density and large scale metal contamination make metal detectors only marginally useful. The actual clearing is mostly a painstakingly arduous manual job, with hand tools used to locate and dig out mines. The HALO Trust is an UK based charity that operates the largest clearing operation on the island.
